Dr. Ibrahim Jaffe, MD, is President of the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism (formerly the Jaffe Institute). What is Gnosis?
Divine Gnosis (Marifa) is the illumination of the mind (white mind) by the Light and Wisdom of the Holy Divine One. The experience of Gnosis is deep, profound wisdom, divine understanding and exquisite perceptual clarity joined with infinite unending beauty and love.
Gnosis is recognized as direct knowledge that comes from The Divine itself (tajalli). Gnosis is often described as a piercing clarity and knowing that occurs as one becomes the Eyes, Ears, Tongue, Hands and Heart of The Divine (Awliya-sainthood).
Divine Gnosis brings true guidance, clarity, and wisdom to all of our experiences in life both spiritual and physical. It is Divine Knowing and Wisdom that gives support and guidance to our personal journey and can lead to the greatest success in all aspects of life. This is a life lived in the presence of Divine Oneness, Beauty, and Love.
Divine Gnosis begins as one’s heart becomes established in the Reality of Unity (Haqiqah), through walking the 28 stations of Divine Essential Love. The experience of Unity, the 28th station, is that of Transcendent Ecstatic Love, Witnessing of Divine Truth and completion of the souls longing for Union with Divinity.
Once Unity occurs, the mind then becomes purified from illusion through the Holy Divine Love. The mind then experiences the unfolding beauty of the Pearl of Divine Knowledge. When this pearl takes its radiant form within the Oyster of Divine Love one has reached the Reality of Gnosis and become the Ocean of Divine Wisdom.
True Purification and Illumination of the mind through the Holy Divine Love is the key ingredient and process of reaching to the Reality of Gnosis. It leads to the unveiling of The Illuminated Wisdom that is called Gnosis (Marifa).
Sufi Masters and Saints say that one of our greatest aspirations and richest jewels found within the humans spiritual journey is our arrival into the world of Unity and the experience of Gnosis.
What is Sufism?
Sufism (tasawuf) is a path of purification and knowledge of the heart that leads to Union with the Divine Truth (Haqiqah) and the experience of The Reality of Gnosis (Marifa).
Sufism is a direct path of purification-disappearance (fana) and established subsistence (baqa) that leads to arrival into the higher worlds through the teachings of love and the transformation of the heart.
A True Sufi is one who has purified and reached Holiness and the World of Truth. Their experience of the world is one of deep truth, ecstasy, wisdom, peace, compassion, mercy, love and freedom.
The Sufi Path (tariqa) is a series of inner teachings or stations that are traveled through that lead to deeper and more beautiful experience of love and Divine Union. True purpose, meaning and fulfillment in life are found through these teachings. A Sufi is considered to be truly rich in their inner reality and their heart has become a Holy Jewel of Love.
Sufism is considered to be a complete path. This means that it includes all of the teachings that can lead a soul out of the world of pain and suffering and into the higher worlds of Divine Union (Haqiqah), Love, Knowledge (gnosis) and Completion (kamil).
Sufism includes the teachings from all the prophetic traditions and holds all these traditions in love and oneness. Sufism believes that all these teachings are one Divine Teaching that has been revealed and unfolded through different teachers (prophets) in different times to different cultures. Sufism considers its origins to be from the Prophet Abraham 3500 years ago. The teachings have been developed, refined and expanded until today by an unbroken line of prophets and saints.
Sufism refers to the direct path of Invoking, merging, witnessing and understanding the One. Prophets are those people who had direct, consistent, pure contact and revelation from Divinity. Sufism is considered to be the inner mystical teachings that the prophets brought on how to reach this world of Love, Unity and Knowledge.
Sufism is taught throughout the world today. Sufis believe that when a culture reaches a place of deep suffering and confusion, it calls out to God and then Sufism arises and awakens.
What is Haqiqah?
Haqiqah or the Reality of Divine Truth occurs when the heart consciously witnesses and becomes one with the Divine Love and Divine Truth within the World of God.
Haqiqah is described as the completion of the journey of the soul as it leaves the world of humanity (mulk) and enters into the world of Divinity (lahut).
Haqiqah is experienced as a state of deep ecstasy, love and beauty that occurs from the disappearance of self (fana), through witnessing the Divine Love.
When one reaches the world of Haqiqah they have entered into the Ocean of Divine Love and experience and unending fountain of love, truth, beauty, kindness, compassion and mercy emanating from their hearts. This fountain only brings good to the world and seeks to relieve suffering, bring healing and awaken truth.
What are the Stations of Love?
The stations of love are a series of teachings that lead to the awakening, illumination and fulfillment of the heart as it enters into the world of Unity (Haqiqah), Gnosis (Marifa) and Completion (Insan al Kamil).
Each station is a specific teaching that leads to purification of the heart from suffering and illusion and the deepening experience of love, beauty and oneness with the Divine. This is called the Walking.
Each station is walked through which means that a certain amount of knowledge most be learned and a specific aspect of the self must be purified through love.
The stations walk one progressively through purification of the self, heart, soul and secret. It is in the world of the secret (Lahut), that the Divine Reality of Truth (Haqiqah) and the Ocean of Divine Wisdom (Gnosis-Marifa) occurs.
The Ocean of the Love teachings are the traveling through the stations of love and the awakening of the heart into the world of Haqiqah or Truth.
The Reality of Gnosis Teachings and becoming The Ocean of Divine Wisdom are the deeper teachings of love that awaken the mind to true Divine Knowledge.
